One can only imagine that the numbers are even higher for suicide attempts and suicide deaths. It has been reported that in depression, only 7% of people with the illness make it better by themselves. Studies show that 80% of all people with depression are helped by psychotherapy, 8% by medication, and 7% by both. These are sobering statistics.
There is hope, though. The other side of the coin is that stress is preventable. According to a Harvard doctor, Dr. Charlotte Winston, “Stress is the core cause of illness”. She goes on to say that “Stress is a stress that we create. The benefits are also incredible. It’s not an easy road, but that’s where I like to start.”

The _____ are out of the garden and eating my strawberries
We had a scare when we were at Nonna’s house earlier this week. We found out that the berry bushes are laden with baby black bears. We were concerned that they might come down and eat our strawberries. If they actually touch our fruit, well, it could be a problem. However, the bears seem to have gotten the hint and have left our berries alone. They are wary of us because we have taken down many of the feeders that used to attract the bears.
In their defense, they remind me of the comedian Sully Stevens, whose one-liner is, “If bears aren’t out of the garden, they’re in the garden.” Which is exactly what we’re seeing here. Although there are no babies or bears in the garden, some opportunistic squirrels have moved in and are eating our ripe strawberries. How dare you? No? Just me?
Garden of weevils is a somewhat ironic title. After all, the bugs that are eating our fruits and vegetables are actually beneficial insects that eat the pests. My most recent offering of this title was the June 16, 2006 issue of The Pacific Northwest Senior News. In her article, Jean Ehrlich writes, “It is thanks to the white grubs (larvae) that most of our fruits, nuts and vegetables are safe from the notorious pests called weevils.”
At this time of the year, black bears are living off the fat reserves they built up while eating berries during the summer. They generally aren’t out and about, so have no need for feeders. And they certainly don’t have their own area of the garden. However, it’s hard to imagine that all the berry bushes are completely free of pests. I saw a sign posted on the front of one of the bushes that said, “Bears don’t eat strawberries.” At the time, I thought it was funny and not entirely accurate. You have to be more vigilant about protecting your berries, just in case there are baby bears in the garden.
And, oh, by the way, “worms are good for your garden.”
