Arnold of Friuli

Arnold of Friuli (; 1171-1235) was an Austrian abbot and patron saint of the Dominicans.

Arnold was born in the small town of Gorincum, Italy (now part of Almásy in Hungary) around 1171 as a son of Hermann de Mandeccia and Hildegard Beringerin. He was raised in the court of King Ottokar II of Bohemia and received the Jesuit Order when in his teens. As a young man he went to Prague University and in 1202 Arnold joined the Dominican Order.

In 1213, Arnold was part of a delegation from King Ottokar II of Bohemia and accompanying Archbishop Henry II of Münster to the King of France, Louis IX, in France. There he became acquainted with Simon de St. Lizore, missionary to the Muslims of the Near East, and through him met the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Fitz-Pons. Arnold in turn persuaded the Archbishop of Canterbury to become patron of the Dominican Order.

A centre of learning and spiritual life, Arnold worked towards the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern age in the Dominican Order. In 1220, he became the last provincial of the order in the Kingdom of Bohemia. In 1221, Pope Honorius III gave Arnold the status of a Strict Observance monk. In 1235, he received the title of Primate of the Kingdom of Bohemia. Arnold was a personal friend of St. Thomas Becket. In 1235, Arnold shared the crowns of Bohemia and Italy with St. Thomas Becket.

Arnold’s final years were spent in the monastery he had established in the small town of Obbistův Chlmec, near Prostějov.
