Simply put, Photoshop is a digital image editor. There are four main approaches to digital image editing:

• Editing with layers

• Editing in a photo shoot mode

• Working directly in the editing software

• Using a separate image-editing program

You can use any of these approaches depending on your project and preference. In the following sections, I provide guidance on using these approaches to achieve your desired results.

Using Photoshop with Layers

Photoshop is a raster editor, meaning that all its changes are made to pixels and all changes made to a pixel overwrite the changes made to that pixel before it. No magic happens in Photoshop. Your output is based on pixels, and nothing’s different. Photoshop has many different types of pixels, but the most common ones are called RGB and CMYK. RGB and CMYK describe three-dimensional color, or the color of a pixel of light. By the way, RGB is the same thing as Red, Green, and Blue — only arranged as a triangle.

Using the Brush tools, you can fill in areas of your image with color by using values of RGB. By placing the Color Picker on a pixel, you can choose a color and a hexadecimal value. Photoshop has several different tools that allow you to place color and provide other editing effects. For example, the Eraser tool enables you to erase a color, while the Healing Brush tool helps to remove an area that’s too close to another area of color. The Spot Healing Brush tool fixes only specific areas, such as one small area of color. The Spot Healing Brush tool works to spot-fix any color within a selected area.

The Brush tool is the most common tool in Photoshop. Even though you have the other tools in your toolbox, the Brush tool remains the most useful tool you can use in Photoshop for most types of images.

Using Photoshop with layers

As I mention earlier in this chapter, Photoshop uses layers. Layers can be understood as a drawing surface. The white areas of the layer are the blank canvas, which is where the image appears. The black areas are the lines that separate the parts of the image. The photo you’re creating appears on the layer in the area between these two boundaries. If you look at Figure 1-1, you can see that the layer was created from the image I created for the cover of my book.

Considering both Photoshop and Elements are made by the same company, it is no wonder there is a lot of overlap between the features of the two. One of the biggest differences between the two is that Photoshop is a suite of tools while Elements is designed to be a standalone utility.

While not the most user-friendly tool, Photoshop Elements does have some cool features that could make it a good choice for some people in the digital world.

How Photoshop Elements works

Each layer is made up of bits of images. Layers can be moved, enlarged, and be combined together using a variety of tools to create amazing images. A single layer is the simplest element. Any image can be broken down into multiple layers which means that the various elements of an image can be isolated and edited independently.

Photoshop has lots of layers available to it and each layer is editable. For the average photographer there is little reason to ever need to make more than two or three layers and these are usually composed of just a handful of elements like a subject, background, and highlights or shadows.

Photoshop Elements, on the other hand, allows you to create layers and then move, combine and edit them easily. Although there is no doubt a great deal of overlap between the two software packages, each can be a great choice depending on your own needs.

How to Make a Photo Layers

When you open Photoshop Elements, the first thing you’ll need to do is save your image. The default size that Elements uses for a new image is 300 pixels wide and 120 pixels high. This works well as a document size. However, if you want to be able to easily enlarge your images for printing or for any other reason, you can save your file using Photoshop’s native dimensions.

You may also want to save your image as a layered Photoshop file to be able to open your image as a layered file.

Computational Role Modeling

I’m planning to pursue the computational modeling of expert decision-making and am wondering if the computational modeling community would be open to a description of the computational role modeling of expert decision-making.
My questions are:

What kinds of expert models have been developed?
What is the background theory behind such models?
Do you have any suggestions for a good book that presents a broad and accessible view of computational role modeling?


This is a really interesting question – and I’d be very interested to see what people in the community have to say about it. I’ve seen it a lot but I’ve never actually had the opportunity to read up on it myself – does anyone have any recommendations?
As for where to start, I’d probably recommend the book The Cognitive Information Processing Handbook (by Gibson and Higgins, with S.H. Avila and S. Greenberg as co-editors) for a broad-based introduction to the principles of modelling human decision-making, including decision trees. It’s pretty accessible, has a lot of different applications, and is appropriate for a wide variety of audiences, so you could probably start there.
On a more specific note, I’ve also seen multiple papers on the topic of expert models in structured decision-making, which I found through Google Scholar. In particular, the paper Expert Systems Used in Teaching, by Perry et al., gives a fairly comprehensive look at the general research area of expert systems, and proposes a specific set of heuristics that they use in their simulations.
