How to Edit and Manipulate Digital Images in Photoshop on Windows

The Photoshop user’s manual contains detailed instructions for using the program. Although Adobe does a good job in the manual of explaining the features, it isn’t as thorough as some other programs. If you don’t know how to use Photoshop, start with the user’s manual.

2. Learn about the different types of edits

A type of image is classified by the type of edits performed to create it. Figure out the different edits and how they are implemented in Photoshop to improve the quality of your images. Start by understanding the Photoshop Basics tutorial in How to Edit a Single Image in Photoshop.

3. Learn about the Photoshop workspace

The program contains more than 100 preset options and menus. Beginners may find it helpful to understand how Photoshop works. In the folder where you store your pictures, create a folder called “photoshop.” In that folder create an “images” subfolder with a filename pattern of 100.jpg. Save your image as 100.jpg in that folder. Create a second file with a filename pattern of 101.jpg. If you have the program open, right-click on the 101.jpg image and select “Image” from the menu. Open the 100.jpg image in Photoshop. The 100.jpg image appears in the “Layers” panel at the bottom of the workspace. The 101.jpg image, which was saved in the same folder as the 100.jpg image, is now the active layer in the workspace and is always highlighted. You can drag any open image into the workspace, or you can click the “Open” icon in the workspace to open a new image.

4. Learn basic image editing techniques

In Photoshop, you can click the “T” icon, which is next to the trash can, to view the top of the workspace and the top navigation menu. Click “Layer” to open the Layers panel. The Layers panel enables you to edit and manipulate different layers in your images. In the Layers panel, click on any image and drag a picture over the image. The picture you drag over the image replaces the image in the workspace. Click the “Image” button to bring up the File menu. Click on “Save As” and save your new image

There are a few Photoshop Elements tutorials on YouTube that can help you get up to speed quickly on editing your images on Adobe Photoshop Elements, and there are dozens of tutorials on learning Photoshop Elements.

Hands-on editors

The first Photoshop Elements editor that I worked with was “Create Looks,” which was previously called “Create Looks and Light Rays.”

Since Photoshop Elements 12, there has been a “Create Looks and Light Rays” option within the “Essentials” tab. This tool now creates new elements that have blended flat colors and light rays.

Creative workspace

The Creative workspace is where you create, save and export new images. Once you’ve created an image, you can move it to the Preview area, where you can see the result of your image manipulations and export a JPEG or PNG.

You can preview new elements in the Preview area that are not yet saved. With the thumb swipe, you can move the image preview to the Timeline view.

The new image pipelines are in the regular workspace. There are two pipelines, “Web” and “Art.” Both are limited to the tasks that you can perform with existing images.

Manipulating existing images is not yet available in the new Image Pipelines, but if you have Adobe Lightroom installed, you can use that app to run some of the new Image Pipelines.

Edit Content and Style

This task contains the tools for editing and enhancing content in your images. It is where you’ll be editing details such as the color, contrast, sharpness and size. The formatting tools for these types of changes are found within the “Edit Content and Style” tab.

There are four tabs in this task: “New Content,” “Existing Content,” “Design,” and “Web.”

New Content This tab contains the tools for editing raw, untouched images. It includes Color, Adjustment, Shapes, Clone Stamp, Puppet Warp, and Twirl. In the “New Content” tab, there is no “Transform” tool.

Existing Content This tab contains the tools for enhancing existing images. You can edit existing images in the “Existing Content” tab using the tools in the Edit Content and Style task, and you can also use these tools in the preview area.

Design This tab has tools for creating and customizing artwork. You can use the tools in the New Content tab to edit graphics that already exist.
