Football Delhi declares Pele’s birthday as “Football Delhi Grassroots Day”
New Delhi, 24th Sept: Football Delhi in its Executive Committee meeting on 23rd September decided to declare 23rd October, the birthday of Edson Arantes do Nascimento, who is known as Pele as “Football Delhi Grassroots Day”.
On the coming 23rd October, grassroots day shall be celebrated with a special focus on women’s football as India is scheduled to host AFC Women’s Asia Cup in January 2022 and above all, FDs inclusive approach in developing football.
Quote from Football Delhi President Shaji Prabhakaran, “Pele is one of the biggest sporting icons world has seen and the three-time World Cup winner have inspired generations across the world and it is our great honour and privilege to declare his birthday as Football Delhi’s Grassroots Day. We want to celebrate his birthday as a grassroots day to inspire many more to be part of football. Further, it is our way to express our gratitude and thanks to Pele for his colossal contributions to global football growth. We also like to pray in mass for his good health and long life”.
Football Delhi will execute the Grassroots Day by involving member clubs and accredited football academies and partners to make this day a memorable and impactful each year. On this coming 23rd October FD will plan to engage Women’s from 4 to 70 years to celebrate the day with age specific fun-filled football activities.
Executive Committee meeting also approved the hosting of North Zone Delhi Group matches in Delhi.
